How to Sync your Menstrual Cycle

Many women ask: should my menstrual cycle be synced with the moon?

Women’s menstrual cycles can range from 25-36 days. Birth control packs are 28 days and popularized the idea that this is the only healthy cycle length. In reality, only about 10% of women have 28 day cycles. But if your cycle is consistently short or long, or has a lot of variability that is a sign things might be out of balance.

If your cycle is around 28-30 days then you might be synced with the moon. We are creatures of the earth and traditionally women cycled with the moon. It was believed that you were most fertile if you ovulated on the full moon and had your period on the new moon.

Full Moon: The full moon is the source of many myths, from werewolves to increased ER visits. The tie to fertility is due to the immense light it provides. This was said to keep us up and since we couldn’t sleep we might as well ‘get busy’ with our partners.

New Moon: The new moon is more yin; which corresponds to darkness, nesting and the female energy. The darkness provided better and longer sleeps which corresponds well to extra rest you may need in the first few days of menstruation.

Other women are synced to the moon but ovulate on the new moon and menstruate on the full moon. Traditionally these women were healers or leaders in their community.

There are lots of ways to normalize and sync your cycle, from seed-cycling & moon-bathing to botanical medicine & bio-identical hormone therapy. Come see me to test your hormones and get you back in sync!
