3 Hormones to Optimize for Weight Loss

csbatting

Weight loss an feel a lot harder if your hormones are out of balance..

The three most important hormones to optimize for weight loss are:

  1. Insulin: this is the hormone that gets 'out of whack' in diabetes and insulin resistance. When working well it brings glucose into the cells for energy. When it is not working, that glucose can't get in as easily AND insulin gets higher and doesn't come down like it should between meals/overnight. This hormone signals growth and fat storage and can drive cravings when it is high.

  2. Thyroid Hormones: I like to explain that your thyroid is like your body's thermometer - it regulates body temperature and metabolism and is very sensitive to changes/stress/environmental toxins. When it is running smoothly, you can regulate your body temperature, your metabolism is running smoothly and you have energy to get through the day.

  3. Cortisol: Cortisol is a very necessary hormone that should peak in the morning and drop off at night. It is a stress hormone though, and many people who are chronically stressed will end up with elevated cortisol either all day or a reverse cortisol curve (often resulting in insomnia). If your cortisol is chronically high, your body is in fight or flight and will store any excess calories as fat because it thinks it needs fuel for the next emergency. The extreme example of this is seen in Cushing's syndrome where one of the key symptoms is excess weight around the abdominal area and upper back.

When calories in, calories out doesn't seem to be doing it for you, OR you are starving/miserable/can't stick to your diet - then these are the top three hormones to check.

If they are out of balance, weight loss is just so much harder mentally and physically. And if we can optimize them, your weight loss journey will be so much better.
